Are you interested in becoming an EMT but not sure you quite have what it takes?

EMTs are healthcare professionals who respond to emergency calls and provide immediate medical care to patients. To become an EMT, you typically need to complete a state-approved training program, pass a certification exam, and meet certain physical requirements.

But there is more to being an EMT than just books and flashcards. The professional takes grit, endurance, and perseverance.

Some of the qualities that may be helpful for someone pursuing a career as an EMT include:

Strong interpersonal skills

EMTs need to be able to communicate effectively with patients, their families, and other medical professionals. If you’re a sourpuss or a debbie downer, this may not be the path for you!

Compassion and empathy

EMTs often work with patients who are experiencing significant physical and emotional distress, and need to be able to provide care with empathy and understanding.

Physical fitness

EMTs may need to lift and move heavy equipment and patients, so physical strength and endurance are important. There are ways to keep yourself in top shape like exercise, restful sleep, and good nutrition.

Ability to remain calm under pressure

EMTs work in high-stress environments and need to be able to make quick, informed decisions under pressure. If you aren’t a self-starter, you may crack under the stress.

Attention to detail

EMTs need to be able to carefully assess patients and accurately record their medical histories and symptoms. Being observant is a must.

If you believe you have the necessary qualities and are willing to undergo the necessary training and certification, then you may have what it takes to be an EMT. Be sure to check out our course offerings on how to get started!
