Hey readers. Amanda here with another blog post. This one is a little different from other articles on our blog, as it covers a more serious topic. We’re discussing traumatic calls that have the potential to disturb your state of mind. You’re only human, after all.

As an EMT, you’ll see accidents, overdoses, trauma, and a whole lot of pain. Here’s what to do when worst comes to worst and you’ve witnessed something so painfully disturbing on call, that you can’t escape the dark feeling.

Talk it out.

Witnessing death or being around constant human suffering isn’t easy for everyone. As EMTs, usually the first bad experience is unforgettable— and not in a good way. If you find your mental health affected by any instances on call, kindly speak with your colleagues to secure resources. Sometimes an ear to listen is all it takes to release the intrusive thoughts.

Head up chin, up.

It’s totally fine if you need a little while to feel completely back to normal. Make sure not to resort to mindless numbing distractions during this time. Remember, this call will help your perspective to develop, helping you better care for thousands of future patients. Once the bad feeling dissipated, you’ll have clarity of mind to confidently handle whatever the job throws at you.
